OpenAI is hiring a Product Designer for its Design Systems team, owning the design system foundations for ChatGPT. The role sets principles, patterns and standards for coherent, high-quality experiences at scale, working closely with research, engineering, product and design.
What you'll do
- Define a high standard for craft and taste across ChatGPT
- Own and evolve design foundations including typography, sizing, spacing, layout, motion, accessibility and responsive behaviour
- Establish a shared source of truth across platforms for tokens, components and patterns
- Build a comprehensive design systems framework with guidance on interface pattern use
- Translate design judgment into durable standards using prototyping and evaluation workflows
- Identify promising patterns across emerging product experiences and document them as reusable foundations
- Partner with research, engineering, product and design to evolve the system and its architecture
- Help shape new ChatGPT experiences while strengthening the shared design system

- Sophisticated design taste made explicit, teachable and actionable
- Deep experience designing and evolving product or design systems at scale
- View of a design system as a living body of product judgment
- Exceptional command of typography, layout, spacing, responsive behaviour, accessibility and interaction design
- Ability to move between foundational systems work and high-craft product experiences
- Focus on choosing the right default as well as the full range of possibilities
- Ability to explain when and why a product team should choose a pattern
- Skill turning ambiguous or inconsistent work into a coherent, extensible system
- Curiosity about emerging technology and how design systems can evolve with it
