The Technical Design System Lead owns the design system as a product at Taylor & Francis, reporting to the Head of Product Design. They define what enters the system, how it is built, documented, and used across design and engineering, ensuring it evolves with the platform transformation.
What you'll do
- Define and maintain the design system roadmap, identifying gaps and sequencing improvements
- Establish a clear vision for the design system's purpose, scope, and governing principles
- Track and report on system health, adoption rates, component coverage, and accessibility compliance
- Contribute to design strategy conversations on how system capabilities enable or constrain product design
- Stay informed about evolving product portfolio to reflect new domains and patterns in the system
- Design, build, and maintain a comprehensive library of reusable components
- Architect and govern design tokens, defining the semantic layer between raw values and components
- Maintain Storybook as the single source of truth for component documentation
- Establish a versioning and deprecation model allowing system evolution without breaking implementations
- Ensure all components meet WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards as a baseline
- Work closely with front-end engineering leads on robust, well-tested code implementation
- Bridge the gap between design intent and engineering implementation, identifying Figma/React divergence
- Collaborate with Product Designers to understand real-world system usage and needed evolution
- Support engineering teams in system adoption through documentation, onboarding, and implementation support
- Own the accessibility standard, ensuring components meet WCAG 2.2 AA with documented guidance
- Work with the accessibility practice or external auditors to validate component-level accessibility
- Build automated accessibility testing into the component development pipeline
- Champion accessibility as a product quality standard across design and engineering
- Own design system documentation, ensuring it is comprehensive, accurate, and current
- Produce usage guidelines on when and how to use and compose components
- Create onboarding materials and reference guides for new designers and engineers
What we're looking for
- significant experience in design systems or a hybrid design-engineering role
- evidence of having built and scaled a design system in a large consumer-facing organisation
- strong design sensibility for components, token architecture, and system trust
- production-grade front-end engineering capability in React or equivalent
- deep expertise in design tokens, semantic architecture, theming, Figma-to-code translation
- advanced proficiency in Figma including component architecture, auto-layout, variables
- hands-on experience with Storybook or equivalent documentation tooling
- experience designing and operating a contribution and governance model for a design system
- strong communication skills bridging designers and engineers
- a product mindset treating the design system as a product with users and roadmap
