Staff Product Designer, Design Systems

Etsy

Apply to this job

Staff Product Designer role on Etsy's Design Systems team within UX Platform, working on Collage, Etsy's design system spanning web, iOS, Android, and Flutter. Owns component architecture, lifecycle, and quality bar as the system matures from reactive to opinionated. Reports to the Senior Product Design Manager for Design Systems and UX AI Enablement.

What you'll do

  • Architect component anatomy, API and composition models, variant strategies, and token structures across platforms
  • Refine the component lifecycle: proposal, prioritisation, design, documentation, graduation, and deprecation
  • Structure tokens, metadata, and documentation so quality can be operated on programmatically
  • Document decisions as you make them and pull the team into messy architecture problems
  • Partner hands-on with teams consuming Collage to find and fix root causes of failure
  • Work day to day with web and native engineering leads on implementable, token-backed decisions
  • Champion accessibility, precision, and completeness across everything the system produces
  • Lead cross-squad design objectives connecting to UX Platform's strategy
  • Set visual and interaction standards resolving complex problems across surfaces and platforms
  • Contribute strategic improvements to the design system and drive adoption of new patterns
  • Help designers across the org adapt their work to existing patterns and conventions
  • Build prototypes that clarify direction and create organisational alignment
  • Influence priorities and roadmaps while holding near-term delivery and long-term vision
  • Model giving and applying feedback to raise the quality of surrounding work
  • Evolve the team's ways of working, intake process, and documentation practices

What we're looking for

  • Portfolio showing design systems work at scale: component architecture, tokens, delivery across web, iOS, Android
  • Judgment on where the system should be opinionated versus flexible, thinking in composition not accumulation
  • Comfort using agentic tools like Cursor or Claude alongside understanding of the coded medium
  • Transparent way of working: writing decisions down and sharing reasoning openly
  • Genuine comfort working with engineers, reading component implementations and adjusting designs accordingly
  • Strong visual craft in typography, colour, space, and density as system-level decisions
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity, frame poorly-defined problems, and align stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and storytelling for leadership and engineering audiences alike

Good to know

  • Full-time position
  • Reports to the Senior Product Design Manager for Design Systems and UX AI Enablement
  • Visa sponsorship supported, though opportunities may be limited to certain roles
