CarGurus is hiring a Senior UX Designer to lead the evolution of its design system across all products and platforms. The role sits at the intersection of design and engineering, owning shared standards, components and governance. It aims to give designers and engineers a single source of truth that speeds up product development.
What you'll do
- Define, maintain and evolve components, patterns and interaction standards
- Partner with engineering on system implementation, architecture and handoff processes
- Monitor system usage to identify and close gaps before they become workarounds
- Reduce redundant work by standardising common design and development solutions
- Support teams adopting the system through documentation, reviews and collaboration
- Govern the contribution process for proposing, reviewing and approving changes
- Maintain the system backlog and triage incoming requests with clear prioritisation
What we're looking for
- 7+ years in UX/product design, 4+ focused on design systems
- Expertise with Figma variables and component architecture mapped to coded tokens
- Working knowledge of front-end fundamentals (HTML, CSS)
- Experience with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) informing component design
- Strong systems thinking, spotting patterns and designing for reuse
- Experience building and scaling a design system at a multi-team product company
- Ability to balance consistency with flexibility in standardisation decisions
- Familiarity with design tokens, component libraries and handoff tooling
- AI-first mindset integrating LLMs and automation into design system workflow
- Clear communication and cross-team influence without formal authority
- Detail-oriented and reliable in maintaining accurate documentation
- Comfort in a governance role, setting standards and running reviews
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with design token pipelines and tooling (Style Dictionary, Theo, or equivalent)
- Certification in IAAP/WAAS
- Experience with component library tooling, writing or reviewing code-layer documentation
- Familiarity with version control (Git) and design system development workflows
