Barclays is hiring a Senior UI Engineer to lead the Design Systems Team within the Digital Experience Platform team. The role owns the foundational component library and design system powering next-generation digital experiences, setting technical direction while actively programming.

What you'll do

  • Lead and develop a team of UI engineers, defining roles and mentoring
  • Own architecture of a React-based component library following design system principles
  • Collaborate with designers to translate tokens and specifications into production-ready components
  • Create and maintain tooling, documentation, and developer experience improvements
  • Partner cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and platform engineers to define component APIs
  • Implement testing strategies including unit tests, visual regression tests, and accessibility audits
  • Champion accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and inclusive design principles
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, build pipelines, and release processes for the component library

What we're looking for

  • Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams, mentoring engineers
  • Extensive proficiency in React and TypeScript building component libraries at scale
  • Deep understanding of modern CSS, CSS-in-JS, and utility-first frameworks like Tailwind
  • Experience with design tokens and tooling such as Style Dictionary or Token Studio
  • Solid understanding of web accessibility standards, ARIA patterns, keyboard navigation
  • Experience with component documentation tools such as Storybook
  • Familiarity with modern build tools and package management (Vite, Rollup, npm/pnpm workspaces)
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills

Nice to have

  • Experience with Vue.js or other modern frontend frameworks
  • Knowledge of animation libraries and micro-interaction implementation
  • Experience with monorepo tooling (Nx, Turborepo) and CI/CD pipelines
  • Understanding of semantic versioning, changelog management, and release processes
  • Contributions to open-source design systems or component libraries
  • Experience with Figma plugin development or design-to-code tooling
  • Background in establishing engineering standards, code review practices, and technical documentation
